Membranes on Calibrations

چکیده

M2-branes can blow up into BPS funnels that end on calibrated intersections of M5-branes. In this quick note, we make the observation that the constraints required for the consistency of these solutions are automatic in Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson (BLG) theory, thanks to the fundamental identity and the supersymmetry of the calibration. We also explain how the previous ad hoc fuzzy funnel constructions emerge in this picture, and make some comments about the role of the 3-algebra trace form in the derivation.

M2-branes wrapped on holomorphic curves

Supergravity solutions describing wrapped membranes are easily constructed using the technology of generalised calibrations, whereby the generalised calibration for a particular membrane is gauge equivalent to the supergravity three-form under which the membrane is electrically charged. The generalised calibrations which can exist in spacetimes with non-vanishing flux have not yet been complete...

Sigma-model soliton intersections from exceptional calibrations

A first-order ‘BPS’ equation is obtained for 1/8 supersymmetric intersections of soliton-membranes (lumps) of supersymmetric (4+1)-dimensional massless sigma models, and a special non-singular solution is found that preserves 1/4 supersymmetry. For 4-dimensional hyper-Kähler target spaces (HK4) the BPS equation is shown to be the low-energy limit of the equation for a Cayley-calibrated 4-surfac...

Ascorbic Acid Rejection Characteristics of Modified Platinum Electrodes: A Shelf Life Investigation

Ascorbic acid (AA) is the principle interferent present in brain extracellular fluid that can inhibit the ability of electrochemical sensors to selectively detect a particular analyte of interest. Considerable efforts have been made in recent times to develop highly selective membrane coatings to counteract the drawbacks associated with AA interference during in vivo monitoring. The primary obj...

Multifrequency simulations of the EPR spectra of lipid spin labels in membranes.

Simulations are performed of 34- and 9-GHz EPR spectra, together with 94-GHz EPR spectra, from phospholipid probes spin-labelled at the C4-C14 positions of the sn-2 chain, in liquid-ordered and gel-phase membranes of dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine with high and low cholesterol contents. The multifrequency simulation strategy involves: (i) obtaining partially averaged spin-Hamiltonian tensors f...
